National Indigenous Peoples Day - Going beyond Territorial Acknowledgement

June 21, 2019

Going beyond Territorial Acknowledgement

At our Youth Forum in Tkaronto in May, we started by recognizing the territory. "The land I am standing on today is the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples and is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. I also acknowledge that Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 signed with the Mississaugas of the Credit".

Then, we Dove Deeper into a crucial conversation, think about:

  • Why do we do land acknowledgment?
  • What does reconciliation mean to you?
  • What personal step forward can you make towards reconciliation?

Our Speaking Rights Changemakers shared their engagements to Reconciliation.

"My contribution towards reconciliation is to learn the language. Language is such a powerful expression of the culture, which exactly what is still trying to be taken from first nations peoples. So learning the language is my way to honour reconciliation"
